Grandma Brown's Bran Muffins

Recipe From: Laura Watson

In all the years of contributing recipes to this blog, it's hard to believe I haven't posted grandmas Bran Muffin recipe!   I loved everything that grandma baked/cooked.  But if you were to ask me..... out of all grandmas recipes I treasure most, it would be her Bran Muffins and her Banana bread.

One of my fondest memories of grandmas house was her Bran muffins. Just the batter alone was all I needed to make a little girls day complete!!  Bethany & I would stick our....ahem....fingers into the batter....ahem.....repeatedly when grandma wasnt looking.   We just couldn't get enuf!  LOL  The two of us would of eaten the entire bowl of bran muffin batter if grandma would of minded her own business.  [wink wink}   Then Brian was over there just happy as can be, chuggin' down the rest of the buttermilk. so he didn't seem to mind us giggly girls.  LOL
Now I know why I luved that batter so much. LOL  Ummmm.... can you say 'quart of buttermilk' & 'cup of shortening'?!?! UUHH , yikes!!  But hey, it made for happy memories!  :)

5 teaspoons baking soda
2 cup boiling water
1 quart buttermilk (really? yes! really)
4 eggs
1 cup shortening
1 Tbsp. salt
1 1/2 c. sugar
5 c. flour
2 c. All Bran cereal
2 c. 40% Bran Flakes*

Mix first three ingredients in bowl. Cream together next 4 ingredients. Add alternately with buttermilk mixture, flour, All Bran, & 40%  Bran Flakes. Grease muffin tins 1/3 full. Bake at 400 degrees for 20 min.

*Original recipe calls for 40% Bran Flakes.  However, Post doesn't make them anymore. Instead, they sell something very similar -- Bran Flakes.
Can't say that it will produce Grandmas delectable bran muffins exactly since I haven't tried making it with the new version of Bran Flakes.
