Bear Lake Sloppy Jo Jo's

Recipe From: Laura

Sloppy Jo’s,  A true classic! One that’s plentifully profused with a nostalgic taste of childhood memories that flood in every time you take a bite.

This popular sloppy Joe recipe was passed down from the very lady who served hot lunch at Bear Lake middle and high school cafeteria back in the 80s.  The secret ingredient, Chicken Gumbo soup, makes these Sloppy Jo’s hearty & really flavorful--- they’re sure to leave ya with a saucy grin. 😊

Fun fact:  Grandma Brown worked for 10 years at the elementary school cafeteria.

We enjoyed these amazing Sloppy Jo’s even more by buttering and toasting our buns first, then loading up on the delicious meat!

Lets hear what side items you like to serve with your Sloppy Jo’s.  I fancy mine with corn on the cob (when in season), a pickle spear and side salad. Sometimes served with tater tots.

Ingredients:

1 pound ground hamburger

1 onion, diced

¼ c. ketchup

1 Tbsp mustard

1 can chicken gumbo soup

½Tbsp Worcestershire sauce

½ Tbsp. brown sugar

½ tsp. salt

¼ tsp. pepper

½ tsp. sage

Other options- I added 3 cloves of garlic. After all, where there’s onions, there’s garlic. Always. 😊

Mom would sometimes add minced green pepper so that's another option

Directions: Brown hamburger with the onion and drain.  Add rest of ingredients and simmer.  If you want more of a thicker saucer texture, double the sauce ingredients.
