Boo Boo Healing Salve

Recipe From: Laura Watson

Summer activities usually bring about bumps, bruises, and band-aids as well as scrapes and scratches.  Many of us think a well-equipped first aid kit should include Neosporin. New evidence indicates that Neosporin may not be appropriate for everyone as it contains 3 antibiotic ingredients in a petroleum jelly base (no thanks petroleum- its refined to make gasoline!)  Any of the antibiotics in Neosporin can cause an allergic reaction. Neomycin allergy is the most common and it appears that more people are becoming sensitive to it. This homemade Boo Boo salve works the same as Neosporin would. Boo Boo salve works perfect for cuts, scrapes, burns, diaper rash, eczema, and dry, chapped skin.  It keeps for a couple years.  And since it makes a lot, you could give some away as gifts. It was demonstrated at a Relief Society class where I learned about first aid, using herbs and preparedness ideas.

1/2  c. coconut oil
1/2  c. extra virgin olive oil
1/4 c. dried comfrey
1/4  c. dried calendula
2  oz. beeswwax
2  Tbsp. honey (optional)
10  drops lavender essential oil (optional)
small glass jars

In medium pot, mix coconut oil, olive oil, dried comfrey, and dried calendula.  Cook on med. heat, stirring occasionally for 20 min.  Strain herbs from oil using cheesecloth or coffee filter. Discard the herbs . Wipe any remaining herbs from the pot you used, and add the oil back into the pot. Turn heat to medium. Stir in honey (opt) til completely combined.  Add in beeswax, stirring til completely melted. Mix in the lavender ess. oil (opt).  Pour mixture into jars. Stir occasionally while it cools to ensure even settling. Seal once it's set.

Makes 1 cup-- a little goes a really long way!
